SciGirls is an Emmy award-winning PBS Kids television show, website, and educational outreach program that draws on cutting-edge research about what engages girls in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) learning and careers. Dr. Ortega was asked to appear on this TV show as a SciGirls mentor to three BioSciences High School SciGirls in their quest to determine if a bee hive could be sustained by the vegetation in the neighborhood surrounding their school. The girls used mathematics and statistics to estimate the food supply available to the bee colony while learning about local sustainability initiatives.
